Neose Technologies, a biotech company originated at the University of Pennsylvania, is an example of researchers transferring technology from academic research to private industry. The new facility included all the spaces needed for a start-up company for genetic engineering: laboratories, lab support spaces, equipment areas, administrative space and front office marketing areas. Because of the start-up quality of the research work and potential for growth, each lab was designed to accommodate all levels of researchers, from chief scientific officers to principal investigators and technicians.
