Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission-Service Plaza Reconstruction

VITETTA is under contract with HMS Host for the replacement of all of the existing service plazas along the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Four of the service plazas have been demolished, with replacements constructed and opened for business as of May 2008. Three more sites are currently in the bidding phase, with openings planned for May 2009 and May 2010, with two sites in schematic design. All of the service plaza facilities are based upon one of two conceptual designs that were created by VITETTA in 2006 with input from both the PA Turnpike and HMS Host regarding design features and functional requirements. The service plazas are then adapted as required to conform to local site conditions, market conditions, zoning requirements, and local materials. This system allows for buildings that are customized to the project site while eventually presenting a consistent architectural imagery along the full length of the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike - Oakmont Service Plaza located at Milepost 49.33 Eastbound on the Pennsylvania Mainline Turnpike is the first phase of the reconstruction of all of the Service Plazas along the Turnpike. The project included demolishing a 1940's vintage Service Plaza Building and construction of a new building in its place. The one-story 14,000 SF facility was developed as a prototype, which can be used at subsequent Service Plaza reconstructions. The architecture chosen for the building closely resembles vernacular Pennsylvania architectural forms with steep pitched roofs, stone and wood siding on the exterior. The interior is designed to provide a common eating space, large and spacious restroom facilities, and venues for various food service brands such as Starbuck's, Hershey's Ice Cream, Burger King, Quiznos, etc... The construction of this $8 million facility was completed on a fast-track basis in order to minimize the downtime for the facility. This included beginning demolition of the existing facility on Labor Day 2006 and completion of the facility for opening on May 14, 2007.
