This 70-bed Medium Security Juvenile Center was developed to provide new options for treatment within the County of Madera. Emphasis was placed on using a variety of massing forms and residential construction characteristics to blend with local aesthetics and street scale. Colors and textures were “borrowed” from the existing complex of buildings and augmented with brighter, more playful hues and wood accents to emphasize this building as a new direction in juvenile rehabilitation for the County. Low profile security monitoring and control devices were utilized to provide maximum security along with minimization of staffing. This created a high level of security and safety for officers with a non-institutional appearance. Intrusion detection, access control, video surveillance, door controls and intercommunications were integrated into a single Security Management and Control System (SCMS) to maximize operator efficiencies.
