University of Pennsylvania Health System Consolidated Patient Services

VITETTA supported the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania for the planning, architecture and engineering design of a major new entrance to the hospital's 1.7 million square feet of space. The project's purpose was to clarify and simplify the arrival and path finding choices for in-patients, ambulatory patients and visitors to the institution. A two-story lobby was carved out of the building to visually and functionally integrate arrivals from the street, as well as from an over-street bridge. The key to the success of the design was the careful redefinition of major circulation elements providing simplified arrival and movement systems for the public while keeping in character with the hospital's reputation and history as a major teaching, research, and care-giving medical center.
